Captain Caryl Liddell Hargreaves was born on 19 November 1887, the youngest son of Reginald Gervis Hargreaves and Alice Pleasance (the original of ‘Alice’ in Lewis Carroll’s
Alice in Wonderland). During the Great War he served initially with the Scots Guards, subsequently being Special Employed as an Agent with the Intelligence Corps between 21 January 1916 and 26 November 1916, before serving on the staff with H.Q. 5 Army. He had two brothers killed during the Great War, Captain Alan Knyveton Hargreaves, D.S.O., and Captain Leopold Reginald Hargreaves, M.C. Sold with further research detail.
