Frank Compton Dare was born in 1867 in Bridgend, Glamorgan, and educated at the United Westminster Schools. He was a banker by profession which probably accounts for the wide variety of units he served with. In January 1885 he enlisted as a Private into the 2nd (Vol.) Battalion, The Welsh Regiment and served with them until November 1889. On discharge he was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant in the 1st Monmouth Volunteer Artillery, and served with this unit until February 1897. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in August 1899, he joined the 3rd (Vol.) Battalion, South Wales Borderers, was promoted Lieutenant in July 1900, and Captain in March 1906. He was appointed Captain & Q.M. in the 2nd West Yorkshire Royal Engineers (Vol.) in Spetember 1907.

When the Great War broke out he was Bank Manager at Ringwood Hampshire, and was appointed to the 2/9th Battalion (Hampshire Cyclists) on Home service from August 1914 to April 1918, as second in command. He was brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War for valuable services rendered in connection with the War and awarded the T.D. London Gazette 6 December 1917. He was demobilised in February 1919 and retired (age limit) in 1921. Sold with full research.
