I.D.S.M. awarded for North West Frontier 1937, one of approximately 40 awarded for this campaign.

On 27 April 1937 the Brigade camp at Biche Kashkai was heavily sniped from all sides at night. Parties of tribesmen got to within 25 yards of the perimeter. They were held off by machine-gun fire, but one NCO and 2 Sepoys were wounded. Mangal Singh was decorated for gallantry and endurance in continuing to command his machine-gun after being wounded in the head.
