A Great War O.B.E. group of four awarded to Captain Albert Smith, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment

Albert Smith was born at Cowling, Yorkshire, on 15 June 1867, and commenced work part time in a worsted mill in 1875. He was subsequently a weaver and powerloom overlooker in a cotton mill, and was Secretary to Nelson Overlookers’ Association, 1898-1929; President, General Union of Powerloom Overlookers, Nelson and District Textile Trades Federation, and held various other offices connected with Trade Unions; Chairman of Executive Committee, Nelson District Nursing Association; Mayor of Nelson, 1908-10; Labour M.P. for Clitheroe Division of Lancashire, and Nelson and Colne Parliamentary Borough, 1910-20; Served as a Captain during the Great War in the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, retired 1928; J.P. for the Borough of Nelson and County of Lancaster; D.L. County Palatine of Lancashire. Captain Smith died on 7 April 1942.
