Arthur Le Grand Jacob was born at Bhuj, India, on 19 February 1867, son of Major-General W. Jacob, Indian Army. He was educated at Sherborne School, and at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Gazetted into the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in January 1886, he transferred to the Indian Staff Corps in June 1887, and served in the Zhob Valley Expedition in 1890. He was promoted to Captain in January 1897, and in the following year served in the operations in Mekran, including the action of Gok Parosh (mentioned in despatches and created Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). The Insignia were presented to him by the Queen at Windsor on 17 November 1898.

In 1901 and 1902 he again saw active service on the North West Frontier, in Waziristan (Medal with clasp). He was promoted to Major in January 1904, created a C.I.E. in 1907, and promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in October 1911. Jacob served in the Great War from 1914, as Assistant Adjutant and Quarter-Master General, Indian Expeditionary Force “D”; Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force, March 1917 to March 1919; and as Base Commandant, M.E.F., from March 1919. During 1918 he was appointed A.D.C. to the King, created a C.M.G., and given the Brevet of Colonel.
