Group of five to Major D. C. Mirrielees, Black Watch, awarded the M.C. during the Fall of France, and later killed in action

General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Palestine (Lt., B.W.); 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals, extremely fine (5) £300-350

M.C. London Gazette 18 October 1940. The recommendation states ‘On June 5th this officer entered the village of Chepy unaccompanied to find out if the enemy were in it, although the information at his disposal was that the enemy held the village. Again on June 6th he held an exposed position on the left of the battalion on an open flank during a withdrawal, remaining with his rear section until almost surrounded by the enemy and in such a position that his withdrawal was only possible owing to the assistance of carriers. He also set a fine example of coolness to his men.’

Donal Currie Mirrielees, M.C. was killed in action on 29 August 1944 whilst serving with the 5th Battalion, Black Watch. He is buried at St Desir War Cemetery, Calvados, France. See Lot 1061 for father’s medals.
