Gerald Arthur Swift was first commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant on 5 January 1915, and joined the 1st Garrison Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment in India. He joined the Indian Police Service as Assistant Superintendent in November 1920 and became Superintendent, United Provinces, in June 1930.
