Lane enlisted in the Royal Marines in 1907, and was promoted to Band Corporal in 1913. He was serving aboard H.M.S. Africa at the outbreak of the war in 1914, and subsequently transferred to H.M.S. King Edward VII. He was among those saved when the King Edward VII struck a mine off Cape Wrath on 16 January 1916. Lane later served as Bandmaster 2nd Class in H.M.S. Furious in 1925, and subsequently as Bandmaster 1st Class in the Hood, Pembroke, and Renown. He died on 22 January 1950.
