Robert Joseph Tucker Stewart was first commissioned into the Northumberland Fusiliers in June 1891 and became Lieutenant in July 1894. He transferred to the Indian Army and served with the 22nd Punjabis on the North West Frontier of India 1897-98, in Malakand, Bajaur and Mohmand (Medal with clasp); Tirah 1897-98 (clasp); South African War 1899-1902 (Queen’s Medal with 3 clasps, King’s Medal with 2 clasps); North West Frontier of India 1902, Darwesh Khel country; War of 1914-21; Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919, with the Cantonment Magistrates Department.
