William Alfred House was born at Portsmouth on 30 July 1858, and joined the Royal Navy in March 1877. At Alexandria he was Captain’s Cook aboard H.M.S. Inflexible, commanded by Captain J. A. Fisher, later 1st Baron Fisher of Kilverstone.
