Arthur Herbert Faithfull was born at Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, on 4 February 1862, and joined the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet on 15 July 1875. He served as Midshipman aboard H.M.S. Sultan at the bombardment of Alexandria in July 1882, for which he received the Egyptian Medal and Khedive’s Star. In February 1885, he failed his Navigation examination for the second time and, under the rules then prevailing, he was discharged from the Navy. Having failed in his career with the Navy, Faithfull headed for India where he joined the Police and took part in the Burma campaign of 1885-87.
