Charles John Balfour joined the Royal Navy in October 1854. As Lieutenant of Opossum, he was specially mentioned for services at the attack on the Peiho Forts on 25 June 1859 (China Medal); Commander of the Sultan at the bombardment of Alexandria, 11 July 1882, during the Egyptian War (Medal and Clasp, Khedive’s Star, promoted Captain); Captain’s Good Service Pension, October 1893; Captain-Superintendent of Pembroke Dockyard, March 1895 to March 1896; retired Rear-Admiral 16 September 1897.
