Henry Varlo was appointed Ensign in the Royal Marines on 7 April 1837. He took part in the campaign in Syria in 1840, at D’Jouni and at the bombardment of Acre, whilst serving aboard H.M.S. Edinburgh. Promoted to Lieutenant in January 1841, and to Captain in September 1849, he subsequently took part in the Baltic expedition in July and August 1854. Captain Varlo was placed on Half-Pay on 13 March 1855.
