Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (Capt. H. J. Harvey, 1/25th Regt.) extremely fine £180-200

Henry James Harvey was born in Guernsey on 28 August 1840, the son of Colonel John Harvey, previously Commanding Officer of the Guernsey Militia. He received a commission as an Ensign into the 2nd Foot on 5 June 1858; transferring to the 25th Foot on 8 September 1858. Promoted Lieutenant, 1 April 1860; and advanced to Captain in March 1873. Saw service in Afghanistan 1878, including the Bazar Valley Expedition, and commanded a mixed force in a very exposed position in the Khyber. Received his Majority in July 1881, eventually retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in August 1888. He died at his home in St Peter Port, Guernsey, on 4 July 1921. Sold with a very large and interesting quantity of research material. This medal is extensively featured in the book Researching British Military Medals, by Steve Dymond, a copy of which is included with the lot.
