Samuel Hill Lawrence was born in Ireland and was appointed Ensign in the 32nd Regiment on 2 January 1806. He became Lieutenant in the regiment in November 1807, and was wounded at Quatre Bras on 16 June 1815. His son, Lieutenant Samuel Hill Lawrence won the Victoria Cross with the 32nd in the defence of Lucknow in 1857.
