King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps (3279 Pte. W. Thomas, 11th Hussars) edge bruise, very fine £60-80

William Thomas was born in London. A Grocer’s Shop Assistant, he attested for the 11th Hussars at Cardiff on 7 July 1891, aged 19 years, 2 months. Promoted to Lance-Corporal in September 1897. Served in South Africa, May-October 1892 and then in India, October 1892-March 1899 where he earned the I.G.S. Medal with clasp for Punjab Frontier 1897-98. Returning home, he was transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1899 but was recalled to the Colours in December 1899. Served in South Africa, March 1900-September 1902, earning the Queen’s medal with clasps for Cape Colony and Orange Free State and the King’s medal with two clasps. Thomas was transferred to the Army Reserve once more in June 1903 and discharged the following month.
