Samuel Richard Lett was born in Liverpool. A Clerk by occupation and a member of the 5th Lancashire Royal Volunteers, he attested for the 4th Hussars at Liverpool on 12 February 1886, aged 20 years. He attained the rank of Sergeant in July 1891. Lett was transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1893 but resumed active service in November that year, transferring to the 11th Hussars. With them he served in India, December 1893-April 1898. Was appointed Corporal in that regiment in January 1896. Arrested in June 1896 and tried by Regimental Court Martial for neglecting to obey orders, he was sentenced to be reduced to the ranks but the sentence was remitted. Corporal Lett was discharged having completed his first period of service on 18 April 1898. He re-joined the Cavalry in September 1914 but was discharged in February 1915, not having served overseas. The I.G.S. was his only medallic award.
