The South Africa Medal awarded to Private R. Coughlan, 1/24th Regiment, who was killed in action at Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879

South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (1690 Pte. R. Coughlan, 1.24th Foot), edge nicks, good very fine £6000-7000

Richard Coughlan enlisted in the 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment in Manchester in May 1869 and served in Malta and Gibraltar prior to being embarked for the Cape of Good Hope in early 1875. Subsequently killed in action at Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879, his effects were recorded for claim by his next of kin and his Medal & clasp issued in November 1881.
