John Smart was born in Leicester. A Lambs Wool Comber by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Leicester on 18 April 1846, aged 16 years, 9 months. Served in Malta, 5 years, 9 months and in the Crimea, 11 months. Served in the 8th Battalion, April 1846-April 1859 and then with the 9th Battalion, May 1859-July 1868. With copied service papers.
