Robert Mates was born in Arundel, Sussex in 1825. A Servant by occupation, he attested for unlimited service in the East India Company’s infantry at London on 17 June 1845, aged 30 years, 3 months. He embarked on the Mary Anne for Bombay on 29 July 1845 and on arrival was posted to the 1st European Regiment of Fusiliers. With the regiment he took part in the Second Sikh War. Mates died on 1 November 1850 and was buried in Poona. With some copied research.
