New Zealand 1845-66, reverse undated (939 Pte. P. Turner, 57th Foot), officially engraved naming circa 1880, good very fine £240-280
Peter Turner enlisted in the 57th Regiment in March 1854, apparently direct from employment as a butler, in which profession he had ‘fallen from grace’. He joined his regiment at Taranaki, New Zealand in September 1864 but his subsequent career was of a chequered nature, including a conviction for desertion and a period in gaol. He was discharged in March 1867.
