Military General Service 1793-1814, 4 clasps, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Pyrenees, Toulouse (A. Hillman, Drumr., 40th Foot), with silver riband buckle inscribed, ‘Peninsula’ and ‘Waterloo’, the side-carriages between the first and second clasps bent, a little polished, nearly very fine £800-1000

Alexander Hillman was born in Shepton Mallet, Somerset and enlisted in the 40th Foot at Wells in March 1808, aged 16 years. Appointed a drummer, he saw action in the Peninsula 1812-14, including the actions of Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, the Pyrenees and Toulouse, in addition to active service in America in the same period. He was also present at Waterloo, where he was wounded in the left leg. He was discharged at Glasgow in June 1817, his ‘form of service having expired’, and was granted ‘marching money’ to return to Somerset, via London. Admitted as an In-Pensioner to the Royal Hospital Chelsea in March 1853, he died there in June 1870; sold with copied research, which includes mention of his daughter having stated that ‘his Waterloo Medal was lost overboard when he was at sea’.
