A scarce 1887 pattern heavy cavalry officer’s presentation sword for an officer of the Surma Valley Light Horse, the slightly curved 91cm blade by Lyon & Lyon, Calcutta, etched with crowned VRI cypher, foliate panels, and within a panel the presentation inscription, ‘Surma Valley Light Horse. Prize presented by Col. A Milne, C.I.E. 1897 Won by 2nd. Lieut. James Grierson’. A small crest and motto ‘Hoc securior’ engraved near the ricasso, regulation steel guard, back-strap chequered for entire length, stepped pommel with tang button, fish-skin covered grip bound with copper wire, complete with steel its scabbard with two hanging rings, good condition overall £450-500
