Although Gilbart is not confirmed as serving with the 9th Lancers during W.W.2, the unit was heavily involved in the war - playing a key part in shielding the retreating B.E.F. to Dunkirk; were heavily involved at the battle of El Alamein and the campaign in North Africa and the advance through Italy in 1944/45. After the war the unit served three years in Malaya but did not serve as a unit in Palestine. Elements of the 9th Lancers based in Malaya were later utilised as part of the R.A.C. in Korea.
