1939-45 Star Atlantic Star, clasp, France and Germany; Italy Star; Defence Medal, Canadian issue in silver; Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, with overseas clasp; War Medal 1939-45, Canadian issue in silver, all unnamed, mounted court style for wear, nearly extremely fine (6) £80-100

Gerrard Hartley Smith was born in Birkenhead, England on 5 December 1905. He enlisted into the R.C.N.V.R. at Halifax, Nova Scotia on 4 September 1940, ranked as an Acting Lieutenant at H.M.C.S. Stadacona (Halifax, N.S.). Promoted to Lieutenant in November 1940 when at H.M.S. Nimrod (Campbeltown, Argyll); Acting Lieutenant-Commander in January 1943 when at H.M.S. Collingwood (Fareham, Kent) and confirmed in that rank in January 1945 when at H.M.S. Hasdrubal. Latterly on H.M.C.S. Niobe. Discharged as a Lieutenant-Commander at Glasgow, Scotland on 1 November 1945.

Collingwood, February 1943; Prince Baudouin, July 1944; Pembroke, August 1944; Bern, June 1945 and Niobe, November 1945; letters and papers re promotions, payments and appointments; and with copied service papers.
