George Dawson Hope Atkin was born on 31 July 1896, the only son of Hope Tweedale and Eva Atkin. He was educated at Birkenhead School and Gresham School in Holt, Norfolk. He received his commission in the 4th Battalion Liverpool Regiment in January 1915 and was posted to France in May 1915. He was mortally wounded on 15 July 1916 at Bazentine-le-Petite Wood and died the following day. He is buried at La Neuville British Cemetery, France.
