Morris Lewenthal, a native of Edinburgh, was killed in action on 19 December 1914, while serving in the 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. His unit, part of the Sirhind Brigade, 3rd Lahore Division, has arrived at Marseilles from India less than three weeks earlier and first saw action near Festubert on the 11th. It was, however, in a dawn attack launched against German trenches near Givenchy on the 19th that Lewenthal fell in action, the war diary stating that his unit’s gains were ‘gallantly defended throughout the rest of the day’.
