Four: Captain of the Afterguard J. Delay, Royal Navy

Baltic 1854-55, unnamed; Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol, unnamed, clasp loose on ribbon; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Jeremiah Delay, Boatn., H.M. Coast Guard); Turkish Crimea, Sardinian issue, unnamed, replacement silver loop suspension, edge bruising, contact marks, very fine (4) £400-500

Jeremiah Delay was born in Co. Cork in September 1832. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy on Prince Regent in October 1852. Served on Neptune as an Ordinary Seaman, March 1854-January 1855, then as an Able Seaman on Gorgon, January 1855-August 1857; Hogue, August 1857-February 1858; Nile, March-September 1858 and Marlborough, September 1858-March 1861. Promoted to Leading Seaman in March 1861, he attained the rank of Captain of the Afterguard in May 1864. Transferred to the Coast Guard in August 1867, he was awarded the L.S. & G.C. in February 1881. Pensioned ashore in August 1883. With copied service papers and other research.
