D.C.M. London Gazette 6 February 1918:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When an enemy strong point, with a garrison of 50 men, was holding up the advance, he led his platoon with great gallantry and initiative round the flank under heavy fire and enfiladed the position. Owing to his prompt action the enemy were kept engaged and the position was captured. He has invariably set a magnificent example of courage and devotion to duty.’

London Gazette 23 July 1919.

Christopher Thomas Carpenter, a native of Radstock, Somerset, enlisted in the Coldstream Guards in October 1914. Embarked for France in late April 1915, he was posted to the 1st Battalion but was wounded by a gunshot in the Laventie sector on 30 November. Having then rejoined his battalion, he won his D.C.M. for the above cited deeds in an attack launched north of Ypres - towards the Houthulst Forest - on 9 October 1917. He ended the war as a Company Sergeant-Major and was transferred to the Reserve in February 1919.
