18th Century, Slough, William Till, Proof Halfpenny, 1794, in silver, arms of the Till family, rev. lion rampant to right, red lion inn, etc., around, edge plain, 11.75g/12h (DH 21). Reverse die flaw well advanced with cud appearing by pe of halfpenny, minor marks, some staining and the remains of an old paper label adhering to obverse, otherwise extremely fine and toned, of the highest rarity; the only known specimen in silver (£500-700)

William Till (†April 1844), coin dealer at 17 Great Russell Street, Covent Garden, London; the Slough tokens made for him by W.J. Taylor, c.1839, commemorate his father, also William, who was a wine and spirit merchant and the proprietor of the Red Lion Inn, formerly located on the north side of the Great West Road near the corner of Stoke Poges Lane, now the Brunel bus station in Slough.
