Founded at the end of 1963, under the auspices of Pierre Dehaye, the energetic director of the French Mint; by 1 January 1964 the society had 355 members. The club published a quarterly illustrated magazine and issued special selections of medals. Concerning the club, Baudey wrote – with a perhaps understandable degree of bitterness – on his index card “actively supported by M Pierre Dehaye, Directeur des Monnaies et Medailles, the modern medal had her ‘golden age’ until M Dehaye left [on 5 April 1984: see magazine No 84]. The club of the medal survives [sic] for another 10 years but, with much less credit and state sponsorship, it is nowadays a shadow of itself, business being the first preoccupation before art”
