A good Victorian officer's presentation sword of the Sudbury Company, 2nd. Volunteer Battalion Suffolk Regiment, 1827 pattern rifle regiment officers sword, the straight 84cm blade etched with crowned VR cypher a strung bugle and intricate foliate scrolls a presentation inscription appears within a zig-zagging ribbon 'Presented to Lieut. Colonel George Lancelot Andrewes on his promotion to field rank by the present & past officers and men of D (Sudbury) Co. 2nd Volr. Battn. Suffolk Regiment 1891' regulation plated hilt incorporating a strung bugle, fish-skin covered grip bound with copper wire, retaining its original sword-knot, complete with its plated steel scabbard, blade retaining all original finish, plating of scabbard worn in one place otherwise in fine condition throughout £400-500

George Leonard Andrewes VD, born 7 May 1856 at Sudbury, a solicitor first commissioned into the Sudbury Co of the Suffolk Vols. in 1879, commanding them by 1892, he was awarded the VD in 1899  and as an Hon. Colonel he resigned his commission in 1905, rejoining his regiment during the Great War. He died 17 September 1916 whilst serving with the 3/5 Battalion and is buried in Sudbury Cemetery, sold with further details.
