The Guinea Pig Club membership badge worn by Flying Officer G. F. Dove, C.G.M., D.F.M., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who, having been decorated for a tour of operations in Whitleys of No. 10 Squadron, was recommended for the V.C. for his extraordinary courage as a Mid-Upper Gunner in a Lancaster of No. 101 Squadron after it was attacked and set on fire by an enemy night fighter in February 1943 - so, too, his pilot: in the event, in a unique chapter in the annals of awards for gallantry in the air, his pilot received a D.S.O. and the remainder of the crew C.G.Ms

One of around just 30 aircrew to be recommended for the V.C. in the entire 1939-45 War, Dove was also one of only 11 men to be awarded the combination of the C.G.M. and D.F.M.; for citations and full career details see D.N.W., 18 May 2011 (Lot 758).

Sold with three original wartime photographs, including Dove wearing his flying kit at Holme-on-Spalding in 1943, and his original R.A.F. ‘Form 373’, together with signed First Day Covers, cassette recordings, copied research and replica C.G.M. and D.F.M.
