Captain The Honourable Francis Maude, R.N. (1798-1886) was the fifth son of the 1st Viscount Hawarden. He entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in 1811 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1820; Commander in 1827 and retired as a Captain in 1856.

When the Shipwrecked Fishermen & Mariners’ Benevolent Society was established following an appeal by Admiral Sir George Cockburn in 1839, Maude was appointed its first Chairman. It was a position he held until his death in 1886. In 1877 he was the sole survivor of the original 1839 committee and it would appear that in recognition of his great services to the Society, he was awarded an honorary gold medal.
