Hugh McCarten was born in 1842 and was educated for the Catholic priesthood at Douai Abbey, France and the Venerable English College, Rome. Father McCarten served at St. Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham, 1868-70; then at Badsley Clinton, Warwickshire, 1870-78; Wednesbury, Staffordshire, 1879; Woodham, Staffordshire, 1879-82; at Lichfield Cathedral, 1882-1911 - with service in South Africa as a Catholic Chaplain. Service in Sutton Coldfield, 1912 and Great Haywood, Staffordshire, 1912-14 followed. With copied research.
