Walter Joseph Wainscott was born in Holmer, Herefordshire. A Pawnbroker’s Assistant by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion South Wales Borderers (Militia), he attested for regular service with the South Wales Borderers on 22 December 1894, aged 18 years. He transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in April 1898. Promoted to Lance-Corporal in July 1898 but was deprived of his stripe in April 1901. Served in Gibraltar, February 1896-February 1898; South Africa, October 1899-July 1900 and China, January 1901-March 1902. Discharged as medically unfit in May 1902.

Wainscott returned to the service in time for the Great War. Serving with the 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 22 August 1914. He was killed in action on 15 September 1914, aged 37 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial. He was the son of Henry and Harriet Wainscott, of 21 Eign Street, Hereford; and husband of Gladys Minnie Wainscott, of 5 Morths Gardens, The Causeway, Horsham, Surrey.
