Peter Hayden was born in Liverpool. A Carter by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment, he attested for short service with regiment at Warrington on 19 February 1897, aged 18 years, 2 months. Serving in South Africa from 30 November 1899, he was wounded in action at Three Tree Hill, Natal, on 23 January 1900. He was invalided to England in May 1900 and discharged on 10 February 1901, having been found medically unfit for further service. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
