Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Cape Colony (Civ. Surg. L. Cooper), very fine £140-160
Ludford Cooper, who was born in London in April 1867, studied medicine at Cambridge University and University College Hospital, where he was a medallist in chemistry, clinical medicine and surgery; M.R.C.S. and L.R.C.P. 1890; elected to the Ophthalmological Society 1901. At the time of his volunteering for service in South Africa, Cooper was a resident surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Rochester. He was embarked in the Avoca in December 1899, served in Cape Colony (Medal & clasp; T.N.A. WO 100/226 refers), and returned home in Orotava in December 1900. Resuming his duties at St. Bartholomew’s after the Boer War, Cooper also worked at the East London Hospital for Children and University College Hospital. The author of a number of medical papers, he also appeared in a promotional film in 1930, namely “A tour of St. Bartholomew's Hospital”. He died at Bognor Regis, Sussex in October 1949; sold with brief career details.
