William Henry Hoskin Allen was baptised at the parish church of St. Treath, Cornwall, in May 1855, the son of a Christopher, a quarryman from Pengelly, and his wife Catherine.

William was killed in action at Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879, aged 24 years, while serving as a Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Regiment of the Natal Native Contingent, Government credit lists recording a payment of £17.2s.6d to his next of kin. An inscription dedicated to his memory is engraved on a family gravestone at St. Treath; sold with copied research.
