Alexander Ross was born in Coleraine, Co. Londonderry. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the Antrim Rifles, he attested for the 59th Regiment at Farnham, Surrey on 19 January 1856, aged 19 years. With them he served in the Cape of Good Hope, Ceylon and the East Indies. He re-engaged in September 1865. His right eye was injured by a splinter of lead when on duty at a rifle range in the East Indies, 16 January 1873. As a result of this injury he was discharged on 28 January 1874, being found unfit for further service. At the time of his discharge he was in possession of four good conduct badges in addition to the above medal. His name appeared five times in the Regimental Defaulters Book, including one conviction by the Civil Power. With copied service papers.
