John King was born in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan. A Painter by occupation, he enlisted into the 3rd Battalion Bombay European Regiment at Liverpool on 7 November 1853, aged 24 years. Serving in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny, he was present at Jhansi, Calpee and Gwalior. He was discharged on 6 July 1859. With copied roll extracts.
