Baltic 1854-55 (1st Lieut. F. E. Halliday, RMA) engraved naming, edge bruising, good very fine £200-240

General Francis Edward Halliday was born at Blandford, Dorset on 28 September 1834 and was educated at the Royal Naval School at New Cross and was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Marines Artillery in December 1852. Eighteen months later he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Served in the Baltic expedition 1854-55 and was one of the officers in charge at the bombardment of Sveaborg for which he was awarded a medal and mentioned in despatches. Promoted to Captain in 1863 and Major in 1877, he gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1880 and Colonel in 1884. In 1893 he attained the rank of General and he retired in 1899. Was a noted watercolour artist and much interested in horticulture. Latterly living at Freathey House, Bishop’s Hall, Somerset; he died on 10 January 1911. His cousin was Lieutenant-General Sir Lewis Stratford Tollemache Halliday, V.C. With a quantity of copied research, including copied photograph of the recipient.
