William George Rendall was born in Dorchester on 8 October 1895. A Groom by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in October 1913. Promoted to Stoker 1st Class in October 1914 when on the cruiser H.M.S. Bristol. As such he served at the battle of the Falkland Islands, 8 December 1914. Served on the battleship H.M.S. Royal Sovereign, April 1916-February 1918 and then on the sloop H.M.S. Daffodil, March-April 1918. On the latter ship he served in the Zeebrugge Raid, 23 April 1918 and is recorded as having participated in the ballot for a V.C. for that operation (London Gazette 23 July 1918). After the raid he returned to H.M.S. Royal Sovereign and was advanced to Acting Leading Stoker in September 1918 and Leading Stoker in March 1919. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1929. During the Second World War he served in the Air Ministry Works Directorate Office, R.A.F. Station Woodsford, Dorset.
