Five: Lieutenant E. D. Smart, Royal Navy, served as an Acting E.R.A. 4th Class on H.M.S. Vindictive in the Zeebrugge Raid, participating in the V.C. ballot for that action

Edwin Douglas Smart was born in Southampton on 15 January 1897. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy Artificer in January 1913 and was promoted to Engine Room Artificer 5th Class in January 1917 when at H.M.S. Victory II; Acting E.R.A. 4th Class in July 1917 on the battleship H.M.S. Hercules and was confirmed in that rank in July 1918 when at H.M.S. Victory II. Further promotions followed, being advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in July 1920 and E.R.A. 2nd Class in July 1924. He was appointed an Acting Warrant Engineer in March 1927 and confirmed in that rank the following year. In March 1937 he was ranked as a Commissioned Engineer and was appointed Acting Lieutenant in August 1945 and Lieutenant (Engineering) in June 1946. Placed on the Retired List as Medically unfit on 14 January 1947.

As an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class he served on H.M.S.
Vindictive in the Zeebrugge Raid, 23 April 1918 and is recorded as having participated in the ballot for a V.C. for that operation (London Gazette 23 July 1918).
