During the Somaliland operations of 1902-04, Carpenter served as a British Nursing Orderly in the hospital ship Hardinge; just one other N.C.O. from the North Staffordshire Regiment appears on the same medal roll entry. Carpenter had earlier served in the 1st Battalion during the Dongola Expedition in 1896 (Queen’s Medal; Khedive’s Medal & clasp); sold with copied roll verification.
