Thomas William Scaife, a native of Pickering in Yorkshire, entered the Royal Flying Corps as an Air Mechanic 2nd Class in November 1915. Advanced to A.M. 1st Class in May 1916, he was posted to No. 34 Squadron in France in July of the same year. The unit later transferred to Italy, flying reconnaissance and bombing missions until the war’s end, the recipient’s service record noting that he was transferred to 11 General Hospital, Genoa, in December 1918, suffering from neuritis. He had meanwhile been advanced to Sergeant Mechanic and was transferred to the R.A.F. Reserve in April 1920; sold with copied photograph of the recipient and copied service record.
