Frederick and Alfred Apsley Matthews were born in Blackheath, Kent, the sons of Archibald Raglan and Judith Matthews. In the 1911 Census Archibald and Judith Matthews with their four sons and two daughters were living at 2 Rusell Place, Blackheath.

In the Great War, Frederick Matthews, born c.1892, was a Lieutenant in the R.H.A. & R.F.A. and entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 27 March 1916. His m.i.c. records that he was awarded an [M.I.D.] emblem. Post-war his address was 91 St. Johns Park, Blackheath.

Alfred Apsley Matthews, born circa 1895, was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion East Surrey Regiment. Lieutenant Alfred Matthews died of wounds in France on 12 September 1916, aged 22 years. He was buried in the St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen. He is recorded as being the son of Archibald Raglan Matthews and Judith Mathews of 91 At. Johns Park, Blackheath.
