James Frederick Vosper was born in Stoke Damerel, Devon in March 1877 and entered the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in July 1892. Having attained the rate of Petty Officer 1st Class in August 1904 and been awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1910, he was serving as an Acting Chief Petty Officer in the cruiser H.M.S. Suffolk on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. Coming ashore to the torpedo establishment Defiance in August 1916, he took up an appointment in Malta in June 1918 and was similarly employed at the war’s end. Vosper was demobilised in December 1919 but served in the Royal Fleet Reserve until the summer of 1923; sold with copied service record.
