John Heron was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. A Stone Cutter by occupation, he enlisted at Montreal on 19 April 1915, having served two years in the 5th Royal Highlanders of Canada (Canadian Militia). Serving with the 42nd Battalion, he arrived in England in June 1915 and entered France in October 1915. Serving in France he was wounded during the battle of Courcelette (battle of the Somme) on 15 September 1916, suffering a gunshot wound to the left thigh and right buttock. Invalided to England he saw no further active service and was discharged in Montreal on 22 May 1919. Heron died on 29 December 1955. With copied service papers.
