Joseph John Paul was born in Battersea, London on 28 March 1866. A Fitter by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 17 December 1889, being confirmed in that rating in January 1891. He was promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class in December 1892 when on H.M.S. Orlando and E.R.A. 2nd Class in December 1896 when at H.M.S. Pembroke II. He served on H.M. Ships Fox, October-December 1897; Heron, December 1897-September 1898 and Jackdaw, September-December 1898. Promoted to Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class in May 1901 when on H.M.S. Repulse and C.E.R.A. 1st Class in May 1907 when on H.M.S. Black Prince. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in January 1905. After service on H.M.S. Forward, August 1910-December 1911, he was pensioned ashore. At the time of the 1911 Census, John Joseph Paul was living at 417 Canterbury Road, Gillingham, with his wife, Susannah Elizabeth and daughter Lilian Ada and son, Jack Heron Paul. J. J. Paul was then employed by the Royal Australian Navy from June 1912; serving as C.E.R.A. 1st Class on Cerberus, Penguin and Pioneer, June 1912-November 1916, after which he served at the London and Sydney Depots until April 1919.

With a portrait photograph (2) of Paul in uniform wearing the above six medals - the two renamed medals being worn before the trio and Naval L.S. & G.C. Together with 31 other photographs of his time on and off the waters of West Africa. Also with copied R.N. service paper covering the period 1889-1914 and copied R.A.N. service paper covering the period 1912-19.
